The animal has historically been seen as a symbol of wealth and power. Different communities pay dowry (property or money brought by a bride to her husband on their marriage) in various forms including money, cows, goats, sheep and any other. Somalis accept camels because they reflect long-life and a man who brings the camels as dowry is respected and valued to the one who brings money. While some Somali give out money as dowry payment, the majority donβt.
